Default Bathory Vs Venom - Quorthon Vs Cronos

Hails,

Tell me who you think had the greater influence in the formation of Black Metal?

Personally, I would be more inclined to say Quarthon's music was far more related to the Black Metal style we see today, especially Blood Fire Death. Then the Viking Metal stages of Hammerheart were truly influential albums for any band.

Venom have had some very good songs. Bloodlust, Burn the Witch, Buried alive all good songs, but personally a bit too rocky for me. Good band, but a song title doesnt create a genre.

Your thoughts?

Bathory I think. I'm not sure that Venom had such an influence on the black metal scene as I don't think they are black metal.
To me, the only reasons why this band is related to black metal are the "satanic" image and the fact that Venom created the 'black metal' terminology while playing 'satanic-oriented' thrash.

Agreed, like when King Diamond erroneously is considered black metal. Therefore: Quorthon.

It depends on which album you're talking about. Of course "Twilight of the gods" isn't black metal, but "The Return" is quite far from viking...

The s/t, The Return and UTSOTBM were defiantly NOT viking metal, and though Blood Fire Death influenced viking stuff and had some lyrical themes I still don't view that as viking metal either. Hammerheart was the first Bathory album that really embraced the viking ideology and created a completely different sound!

Quorthon pisses all over Cronos, though I do love old Venom too!

This is tough. I think Bathory are better, but Venom's influence on Black Metal is undeniable. I pick Bathory though.
