And they did nothing else significant after that

Your honestly going to tell me that anything Slayer did after Season in the Abyss is Significant? If you are lets stop right there. Because it shows that you are blinded by obvious bias based on your love for this band. And even Seasons is rather lackluster. Slayer have done nothing but float along on the name they built for themselves in the 80s.
As for ultimate metal band? There is no ultimate metal band. Metal is far to vast a genre to have 1 band that epitomizes the entire genre. You could make a case for Slayer being the ultimate thrash band(which I disagree with 100%), but anything beyond that is ridiculous.
The closest band to being the "ultimate" metal band is probably Maiden. (can't wait to have you gawk and call them pussies. That would really be icing on the cake). THe evidence is overwhelming. Their run of near-perfect albums in the 80s will never be matched. Their weakest being the s/t from that string of excellence says alot too. Obviously, the 90s was a dark time, but unlike most bands, slayer included, Maiden manage to comeback to the forefront of heavy metal while at the same time completely reinventing themselves. BNW and DOD are easily on par with their 80s work, and thats 10-20 years down the road.
Do I even need to mention how influential Iron Maiden are? Its basically common knowledge.
You can't argue the logic i've put on the table. But the next time Slayer plays Madison Square Garden, we can think about, possibly actually debating this subject. Until then its a moot point.
