Default Parental reactions to your music

Hi everyone

From what I can gather, a lot of people who post here are relatively young and a fair few of you are still living at home with your parents.

Which leads me to ask the question...

...what do your parents think of the music you listen to?

I've asked several people this in the past and have had varied answers. Some were introduced to rock/metal by their parents, who have no objectio to their children listening to the same, and others have parents who disapprove, maybe even forbid it in their house, or in extreme cases, smash up their kids' music collections

Now, my dad is into 60s pop, my mother easy listening. Unfortunately, I was brought up in a fairly strict religious househhold and was completely unaware of rock and metal until I was 14, as sad as that sounds. I started off by getting into grunge, then doom/stoner stuff, before discovering extreme metal. My mother did not like this at all and snapped several of my CDs in half, accusing me of going 'off the rails' because I was listening to 'evil' music.

When I was 18, she made an attempt at trying to understand me and my tastes, and insisted I play something for her. Cathedral's 'Endtyme' was the heaviest thing I owned at that time, so I put on 'Melancholy Emperor' and waited. My mother was silent for most of it, but her face was gradually turning purple with rage. In the end, she turned it off and said in a shaking voice, 'I hope the neighbours couldn't hear that'...needless to say, she was not impressed.

So, as I asked, what do your parents think of your taste in music? Do you find them to be understanding, or have you had problems because of what you listen to?

my parents never took any notice of what i listen to.
i guess they just consider it to be 'noise'.

however i do so enjoy some classic stuff like Beatles
Queen ABBA which my mum love so i guess she respects
teh fact that my tastes are pretty versatile.

Parents think that all metal is "noise"

They have nothing against me listening to it though, and never have done ven when I was younger, I think they're just both relieved that my brother and I don't listen to gangsta rap. Haha.

Hmm...but do parents really feel safe with their children listening to music centering around worshipping Satan, tearing people's intestines out and such like?

When I get seriously pissed off, to the point where I feel I want to kill someone, I put on the most violent music I can lay my hands on and feel instantly soothed. I have no idea why this is, but I'm not complaining; however, I could never expect my parents, my mother especially, to understand that.

Well, my parents are extremely open minded!

They have both only recently turned 50, and so were pretty young when they had me, and are great to hang out with! Dad is not fussed by what I listen to, but will put up with it, and knows quite a few songs I like from exposure I suppose when he comes over!
Mum on the other hand, likes Darkthrone, Storm, Drudkh, Primordial, Enslaved etc, and listens to them at home occasionally (Its weird rocking up and hearing darkthrone playing from a 50 year old)! Then again, they both still come over and have drinks with us and our mates!

So yeah, I don't believe all parents think that Metal is noise! Only the close minded ones! My parents, are freaks though! Ha ha!

Do you think your parents would like to adopt a 25 year old Welsh girl?

Ha ha! Well my two sisters are still at home (14 and 16) and they are not exactly 'Metal' minded, so I don't think you would like that too much!
