I don't know why you would bring this into a metal forum? I can only imagine that the people making these statements were 13-14 year old girls. It's obvious that the people have no idea of the history of punk. They probably don't know what the punk genre is or about. I doubt they were even born then. Do you feel better dumbing them down? What a waste of thread space. Face it there are always going to be people who think they know what they are talking about, when clearly they don't.

I looked up Wikipedia and Avril lavigne is classified as rock. However i saw an article about her in a newspaper yesterday and she was reffered to as a punk. Maybe they mean punk as in her attitude, or that it's just a word that they like to associate with her? I think that the people writing the article are the kind that know nothing about the culture but just use labels that they think fit the person.

I have already heard that Fall Out Boy is labelled as metal and Lordi has even been labelled as Black Metal... can you imagine?
I hate it when people want to label their favourite band as badass as it can be: On our mighty information god Wikipedia Aiden is labelled as alternative rock... IMO almost everything can be labelled as alternative rock except pure rock

Free Record Shop has a section Hard 'n Heavy and I wouldn't be suprised if they'd put Avril or Fall Out Boy there
