Alright, I might as well get this out of the way. I'm bisexual and I am offended by homophobic slurs. Should I just leave this forum now?

I would have thought a bisexual would realise that 99.9% of slurs and abuse involve homosexuality. This is just a general insult to the band/person who may not be of that nature.

You must realise it is not directed at you, so you should not take offence.

We are talking music, not sexual preference. Fair enough most of us will not agree with it, but we are not going to hold it against you, no matter what you are.

I will call you a dickhead based on your musical beliefs, not outside preferences.

Hmm, I run into this odd mindset quite a bit. Somehow I shouldn't be offended when a word used to derogatoraly describe me is assigned the use of general insult regardless of its true meaning. I admit, it is better than using such slurs for their true meaning, however, can you imagine a negro being cool with it if you kept using "******" as an insult in front of him? The basic implication is that the word still denotes something you hold in distain, even if you're not using it in its original meaning. I don't know much about you, but can you imagine if some word used to negatively reference some part of what you are was used as an insult by the whole metal comunity? At first you would laugh it off and try to be cool with it, but I guaranty you would eventualy get damn sick of it no matter how it was meant. Also, when you use homophobic slurs you might know that you don't mean them in their original meaning, but others don't neccisarily know that. Thus regardless of your intention you can still offend people and reinforce homophobia in others.

Anyway, I know I'm not going to change anyone's mind, and you guys are going to keep on using words that offend me, so I guess I'll leave.

BTW, I never considered "dickhead" to be a homophobic insult, so I wouldn't really care if you call me that.

I'm sure if you stayed here a bit longer and gave it a chance, you would grow fond of the community here.. I actually know a few gay people but I guess you have to accept that this kind of thing happens. And also these days, people use the word "gay" for many meanings.. not just meaning homosexual.

Yes. Shit, sorry I must apologise(Just re-read what I wrote).

I was not calling you a dickhead at all.. I was merely suggesting that opinions in this forum will only be based upon music, not anything else.

I mean, look at the religion threads lol Feels like there are about to be a few deaths when I read a thread on religion, but once we are all talking something worthwhile(Music), its a completely different story.

Stick around and once members get to know you, I am sure they will refrain from using such terminologies.

I know this is an old thread, but I just have to add my thoughts, because this stuff drives me nuts.

In my eyes, the word fag has outgrown its original use as a derogatory word for homosexuals. In this day and age it has become just a general putdown. It is now in the same context as 'bitch' or 'pussy'. I have said it jokingly to my friends more than I will ever say it to a gay person. You may take offense, but you shouldn't, because we can all agree that words evolve and I think its safe to say that our world as a whole has given new meaning to the word "fag"

I can see why the gay community can disagree, but there in lies the hypocrisy. Homosexuals adopted the word gay and made it their own. We all know gay once stood as a synonym for happy. But the gay community took the word and made it evolve into the meaning we now hold true. So why, of all people, are homosexuals having such a hard time letting a word evolve?
