I head it when I am in a store and all the metal is just a pile of cds... Nobody will buy a cd without knowing the band that well when they don't know if it is gothic, thrash or black...
When you're looking in the section black metal and you see a cd that looks very promising but you don't know them, you will buy it quicker 'cause you like the genre and the cover appeals you...
And overuse of genres can be funny like troll metal or goblin metal (both exist and are a "different" style) and also very useful to sound smarter than you IQ allows
