I maintain to this day that they have the only true,original and unique metalsound .I dearly love and I sensed a solid maturity, a feeling of serenity in both of J.Hegg and M.Akerfeldt when i listen to them in their official records.Perhaps they has lost many Fans but could very well retake them. After all they are for me the only whom took the world of death and prog metal on.

I know it's an old thread, but since no one has replied yet, I will give my two cents worth. I'd definitely have to go with Johan Hegg from Amon Amarth, because I've always liked Amon Amarth and I find him very talented and I think his voice is quite unique. I can't say Mikael Åkerfeldt isn't talented, but I just don't like his voice or style of vocal. It just doesn't catch my attention. |

I agree with Alfader. I don't mind Mikaels stuff, but I think his best work is when he does vocals for bands other than Opeth  Johan is a lot better than Mikael anyway. His voice appeals to me more. It's much stronger.

Akerfeldt is, I believe, of more worth than Hegg, because his vocals will remain and always be heard in the temple where shadows linger...

LOL! I felt really felt poetic at that moment. Thanx for asking though, Alf.
I believe that Akerfeldt is more talented... Of course, Hegg is also talented indeed. But I think it's the style of each person. For example, Hegg sings about vikings, norns and stuff like that, while Akerfeldt sings mostly about other stuff; Opeth's stuff.. Darkness, shadows, stuff like that.
I also like how Akerfeldt changes from melodic to brutal and the other way around.

Well, yaah, I believe it takes talent to handle various voices, but I don't think Åkerfeldt has a good growls, compared to Hegg. Besides, I don't like clean vocals, but that's just a matter of taste. |

They are quite different and unique in their own genres I think,and are suited to the lyrics they sing.

I think you can't really compare vocalism from two bands of such different genres.
Buuut, out of the two, I would say Johan Hegg from Amon Amarth.
I think Johan's growling is very strong, unique, solid, and pure - fitting AA's genre perfectly.
And I like Amon Amarth more than Opeth.
Both are very talented vocalists though. |

Hegg!! From the first moment I heard him growl it was like amazing is that a man or a beast... now I know it IS a beast
