A good way to growl (this is what I did) is to practice talking like Nathan Explosion, from Dethklok. Once you've got his grated, throaty, gravelly voice impersonation down, try to yell in his voice. Put a lot of stress on the lower part of your throat, and you'll find that you're roaring. It also helps to not open your mouth very wide, if you're trying to get a deep growl.

Low growls and high screams have never been a problem for me, and I've been able to do anything from Dusk era Dani to the vocals on Decapitated's Nihility from about the age of 13, 14. The mid-range, Mortuus (Marduk) style Black Metal vocals have always been a problem for me, since I can't get the right balance of airflow between my chords and false folds - the high pitch remains, and if I attempt to remove it, most of the growl/scream goes as well, leaving me with what is, in effect, the "Abbath Burp".

Still, apparently my vocals are good for the style of music I play, so whatever.
