I'm just teaching myself growling and screaming too, and what works for me is extended practice and LOTS of room temperature water. Buy like a 30 pack of water bottles and keep em on top your fridge or wherever, as long as it IS NOT refridgerated. Drink like 1/4 of the bottle and slowly warm up. Keep drinking more, warm up a bit, more, warm up, more, warm up until you drink the whole bottle. Do a test to see if you are ready then start singing. After every song drink some more water and do the next one. Keep doing this day after day to strengthen your vocals and very slowly wean yourself off the water but NEVER completely eliminate it. And after your done; MORE WATER! Even if you feel you dont need it; you do. Keeps your vox in shape. My vocal capabilities are kinda low and I have athsma so it can make it difficult. I'm really good with the low brutal growls and minor screams but I sound like Barnes on my high notes. It just doesnt work for me when I go high, but I'm practicing more and more and I'm slowly getting better. Same probably applies for everyone. Good luck man! Wish ya the best.

How do you guys warm up with screaming? I'll try drinking water and coke to help my throat. The only vocals I can do is grunting, and I'm pretty limited even at that.

well, i guess i usually do a few shrieks first.

also i find after youve eaten a meal
and theres a bit of saliva built up in the back of your throat that helps to
shield from the soreness.

i sing alot too lol, in the car, shower ect. the more you use your voice in different
ways the better i suppose.

and if your recording dont be afraid to just try softer first and then turn it up.
because thats all it is really, the singers arnt screaming that loud, its just amplified.

Well... What I do is start off with warm ups... I sing in the lowest possible tone my voice can handle and work my way up slowly... And then go from high back to low... I do that for a while while drinking water... Then I'll hit some keys on the piano and try to see if I can match pitch to see what ranges I can hit... After that I just start singing tool or more melodic vocal styles to open my throat and then go to screaming... When screaming you want to make sure it comes from your gut... Not your throat... If your throat starts to hurt or feel itchy then your doing it wrong... Take Deep breaths... You will feel it in your ribs and your throat will no longer be irritated... Then take it from there... Never scream on an empty stomach or an over full stomach it will cause nausia... Instead eat maybe A sandwich or a few chicken strips with some potato chips... That works for me...

i dont think theres a right or wrong way to do vox. i dont warm up when im doing vocals for my band i just get right to it, the first few band practices we had i coughed up blood a little so its perhaps not the best way, but nowadays its not an issue. alternitivly just down some absinthe before singing, it might not work but at least youll be so smashed you wont realise.
