Well it sort of depends on the Genre its its faggy Pop-Rock then a solo is just going to ruin the image of guitarists, How ever if its anything above Metal then a solo is almost required. Slayer have had some good solos, and some bad ones... Raining blood, in my opinion may have been better if they didnt have the twisted metal/noise at the end that was called a "solo", Angel of death however, that shreaded piece of audio beauty was much apreaciated (slightly off topic)

i think that solos are not required but a good solo will certainly gain praise from fans, and perhaps make new believers :P

solos are good in the right context! in some instances id rather hear some technical riffs / harmony's than a long guitar solo

I don't think guitar solos get in the way most of the time. They are allways good at the perfect time. I don't like guitar solos if they are too early and go for ever A good solid 30 seconds to a minute is good for me. nothing compares to a kick ass solo at the perfect time! So in short no i dont think they get in the way

It really depends how the solo is done must of the time new bands screw up but while well administered a guitar solo can really help the song/band.
