i picture ancient castle ruins, people riding horses and staring
out across deep valleys.

definatly depends on the band.
for example:
burzum to me feels lonesome,raw and moody.
immortal sound cold and epic yet also lonesome.
i think for me that is a connecting feeling, solitude.
