Black metal in the 80's was Bathory, Sarcofago, and towards the late 80s it was Mayhem, Samael, etc.
Venom, SOUND-WISE was a thrash band. The reason people argue that they were a black metal band is because their lyrics were satanic/anti-christian in nature and they were the FIRST BAND TO DO THAT. The term black metal was invented by them but they were not a black metal band, far from it, actually.
Musically they took the sound of speed metal bands such as Motorhead to the next level-- they gave it intentionally evil lyrics and became more extreme than anything before them, and that was the point of their music.
With their first album dating 1981, most people consider Welcome to Hell to be the first true thrash album. Their music inspired many bands after them, such as Slayer's.
When it comes to black metal, both Sarcofago and Bathory came out in the same year (1984), but most people consider Bathory to be the first black metal band.
So I don't see why everyone here seems to think Venom is a black metal band. Go anywhere else and you'll get your ass flamed for saying that.
