Default Old school death metal and death/thrash?

Old school death metal. let's say mid 90's can be the cut off point.

Anyone else like old school death metal bands here? Like the big bands (Death, Obituary, Morbid Angel) early stuff, as well as: Nocturnus, Electrocution, Pestilence, later Protector, Atheist, Sickening Gore, Seance... etc

I think it's a great and an undeservedly short lasting period of death metal. I also find the transition of Thrash into Death metal interesting, and I like the (pretty rarely found) death/thrash hybrid sound that seemed to crop up in the early 90's which helped goad this transition onwards (Solstice, Demolition Hammers second album, Pestilences first, much of Protector, Agressor, Thanatos).

Is old school death metal better than the death metal we have now? Favourite old school DM bands? What do you think of the death/thrash hybrid from the early 90's? Do you have any awesome recommendations for me (or maybe I for you )? Discuss!

I bet you'd like Unleashed, they're some pretty damn good Swedish DM. Sometimes a little bit on the thrashy side.

Swedish death is all about Nihilist

Old school DM is my favourite. There is only a few new bands that have that sound, Slugathor is the first to come to mind, also Dead Congregation.

One of the originals in the Swedish death scene, right? Speaking of Swedish death, I always thought Morbid was ridiculous, back when they had Dead and stuff.

When it comes to death metal I also prefer old school. You'd never confuse Bolt Thrower with Carcass with Obituary, etc. Each band was so unique in sound and songwriting. Death metal that came after them became generic, indistinguishable, uninsteresting. Not only could you not tell one song apart from the next, but the bands themselves all sounded the same. As death metal turned to repetitive speed and muddled brutality, the sound to me was less clear, less heavy and less brutal. Meanwhile pop rock/ pop heavy bands appeared that sounded so heavy that they put death metal to shame. Pathetic... Fortunately, melodic death metal appeared which made things interesting again for me.

To all brutal old school death metal fans!! Here is:

SOTAJUMALA: 'Oikeutus' Video Posted Online

"Oikeutus", the new video from the Finnish death metal band SOTAJUMALA, can be viewed below. The clip was shot in April 2008 in Vaasa, Finland.
The song comes off the group's second album, "Teloitus" (Finnish for "execution"), which entered the Finnish chart last October at position No. 17.

The track listing for the effort is as follows:

01. Tappaja ja tapettu [The slayer and the slain]
02. Arkku vailla vainajaa [A corpseless coffin]
03. Kuolinjulistus [Declaration of death]
04. Riistetty viattomuus [Ravaged innocence]
05. Verellä kirjoitettu [Written in blood]
06. Oikeutus [Justification]
07. Kidutus [Torture]
08. Teloitus [Execution]

Death Metal for me is all about the Old School bands - bands like Bolt Thrower, Obituary, Death, Autopsy, Unleashed, Unanimated, Nihilist, Master, Death Strike, Morbid Angel, God Macabre, Utumno, Gorement, Interment, to name but a few.

As mentioned about, they all have their own individual sound and unique way of composing which makes them stand out from the (mostly) generic modern Death Metal.

Having said that though, there are a few bands around nowadays that have that talent for producing solid, original Death Metal in the Old School way. I'm a great fan of Autopsy, so bands such as Funebrarum and Swallowed are a pleasure to listen to.
