Im not a big death metal expert, but to be honest - I prefer melodic death metal to traditional death metal. Bands like Dark Tranquillity, Amon Amarth, Acheron, Vital Remains, Hypocrisy.

The only melodic death bands I like are At the Gates, Dismember and Amon Amarth, but most of the time its too watered down for me. It also reminds me of all those awful metalcore bands like Avenged Sevenfold and Trivium whom I hate deeply. I can listen to melodic death and yes I like melodies in Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, but to me death metal melody shouldn't compromise brutality, like say the aforementioned bands. The atmosphere of Amon Amarth enhances the atmosphere, otherwise they'd be a death metal band with lyrics about Vikings, but they add more melodic elements which enhances the atmosphere. But at the end of the day melodeath to me as a general rule can be summed up like this: I don't hate it completely, its just BORING!

I'm sure that there is plenty of talent in melodic death metal bands, but it seems like there is a lot of music under the guise of melodic death that is difficult to even consider metal. Bands like Amorphis sound closer to Type O Negative than Suffocation, while I have no idea how Opeth is considered death metal...not that they are untalented.
My guess for the constant put-downs of melodic death is that death metal fans appreciate the brutality and rage of the genre, and it is difficult for melodic death to fulfill that.
