Check out Corrupt, Blasphemy, Deadnight they are not famous or anything but they sound really great, and they dont even have a conctract, no albums, only a few demos, they all sound alot like the old school Kreator. But yeah, Death Metal is slowly selling-out, Opeth's new realease was pretty great but will they're next realeases by Roadrunner Records be, Roadrunner screwed up Obituary they might screw up Opeth.

Mainstream bands have to worry about doing something that might jeprodize(sp?) their reputation or possibly lowering their fan base. Other bands that aren't mainstream don't have to worry about that and can just concentrate on making good music. If you mean popular as in popular in the metal scene then it wouldn't matter IMO, its about the music. It was popualr in the 80s but sort of died out then cam back in the mid 90s and has been up and down ever since. The sad part is is that decent metal bands are getting harder and hardr to come by. I wouldn't say metal is dying, but it is being taken over and turned to shit (nu-metal) by MTV :S

Sorry, I am in a descriptive mood today :P
Let's think about this. First of all, Nu-metal is out. I mean out of the mainstream. It was popular for a couple years and now it's gone. What's popular now is metalcore, ala Atreyu, Himsa, etc, etc. It was NOT nu-metal that made metal mainstream, that happened back in the 80's with hair metal bands like Poison, Twisted Sister, Motley Crue, etc. That was lame back then and people nowadays don't see that, thinking that the idea of sellout metal is a product of the late 90's.

When talking about the popularity of REAL metal (not nu-metal or any other type of lame-ass music), it IS popular on an international scale. It is recognized by record labels, record stores, bands, and most imortantly, fans, worldwide, and is more popular, generally speaking than other types of hard music such as punk or hardcore.

I do agree with your first post -- Metallica went bad after the Black Album. They don't play metal any more, that's for sure. For the whole bluesy/southern rock music that they are (were) playing on Load and Reload, they did a decent job of it, but what bothers the shit out of me is all the wasted potential. What I would give for another Ride the Lightning!

I have to say something. Metalcore sucks. It's like Punk and Metal mixed, the worst band form this shitty genre would have to be this band named Eightenn Visions. This is the worst band in the history of time.

You're right, and that was exactly my point. People still talk about nu-metal like it's a problem, and it really isn't anymore. Metalcore and new-wave hardcore are now the problem. Shitty metal is NOT just nu-metal, in the 80's it was hair rock, in the 90's it was nu-metal, and now in the 00's it is metalcore.

On the subject of Metallica, their recent music does suck ass, but it is NOT nu-metal. They are not playing metal at all anymore let alone thrash, and they are not trying to. Their blues-inspired hard rock/modern rock is MUCH better than anything, say, Slipknot ever did, or other nu-metal bands. The reason I say they suck now is because they are wasting their talent (which they DID have at one point) for acceptance in my eyes. That is the true definition of sell-out.

Eighteen Visions and Slipknot both have been worsed, though. Hawethorne Heights is the shittiest band in the fucking world currenlty.
