Default Grave Digger-Liberty or Death

Before I write this review I must admit, my hopes were not high for this album. After the poor results of Grave Digger’s pervious albums like “The Last Supper” and “Rheingold” I had low expectations. But when I popped this into my CD player my mind altered drastically. Every song on this album had an epic feel to me. I couldn’t wait to hear what the next song was going to deliver.

The album opens with the title track “Liberty or Death”. The track opens with something similar to a typical Grave Digger intro that let’s you feel the theme of the album. I find the guitar work in this track amazing and the vocals just as good. Chris hasn’t lost any of the vocal excellence you’d come to expect. This is a great title track. As soon as “Liberty or Death” ends, “Ocean of Blood” begins. This is a fast paced song with a very catchy beat. A great follow up to “Liberty or Death”

Now, for the best song on the album in my opinion. “Highland Tears” is one of the best Grave Digger tracks I’ve ever heard, and that’s saying a lot considering I’m a fan of all their albums. When I first heard the bagpipes in the intro I had a feeling this was going to be good. The instruments blast with fury creating a powerful atmosphere for the rest of the song. The best part of the track is the chorus. The vocal work gives me Goosebumps every time I give it a listen. Very surprising.

The next two tracks are typical Grave Digger. “The Terrible One” has a catchy beat with great drum work. And the solo is superb. “Until the Last King Died” has a different style than the rest of the album. It’s slower paced, but that doesn’t make it bad.

The next two songs are disappointing. Although “March of the Innocent” isn’t a horrible track, it pales in comparison to the previous gems. “Silent Revolution” is defiantly a chink in Liberty or Death’s armor. I find this song boring and nothing like a Grave Digger song.

Don’t worry, the album redeems itself with the track “Shadowland”. The song is fast with awesome drum and guitar work. I personally like the dark feel. “Forecourt to Hell” is also a fantastic song with cool lyrics. I personally like all the grunts the Boltendhal makes in the track, for some reason…

And for the last track, well, it’s a major letdown. Something important is missing from this song. Excitement. It just drags on with no potential. A bad way to end an album.

Overall, this is an amazing album. I must admit I wasn’t looking foreword to it, but know that I own it I will listen many more times. I’ll give it an 8/10.

Best songs: “Highland Tears”, “Ocean of Blood”, “The Terrible One”, and “Shadowland.”

Disappointments: “Silent Revolutions”, and “Massada”.
