Are you talking about Speed Metal or "Metal that is speed" ? Fuck... I'm Dead is grindcore for me.

I don't really consider "Speed Metal" as a style. A band can play quickly, but it doesn't make them "speed metal". Dragonforce play quickly, but they have nothing else really in common with some Thrash bands say, that are labelled "Speed Metal".

Speed Metal definitely is a style on its own but has nothing to do with fast/not fast. Everybody will give you a different definition when it comes to styles in Metal. Here is mine :

Let's take Heavy Metal (IRON MAIDEN, JUDAS PRIEST, BLACK SABBATH). Speed Metal is just an evolution of it but is much faster and has more extreme vocals (OVERKILL, METAL CURCH, METALLICA's Kill Em All).

It has itself led to 2 other styles. The first one kept the variety of the guitars and the harsh side of the vocals. It was Thrash Metal (SLAYER, MEGADETH, EXODUS). The second one kept the speed, the high-pitched vocals and re-integrated the melodies of Heavy Metal. It was Heavy Speed Metal (HELLOWEEN, BLIND GUARDIAN, GAMMA RAY).

DRAGONFORCE is Heavy Speed and not Power Metal as we can hear it sometimes. Power Metal is an evolution of Thrash Metal with slower rhythms and syncopated guitars (PANTERA--90s period, MACHINE HEAD, DEARLY BEHEADED).

Well, that's how I see things.

Dragonforce is Power Metal though. It's standout melodies and such make it so. I think Power Metal evolved more from Heavy Metal as it's basically a more melodic form of Heavy. I've heard Speed Metal being swapped back and forth for Thrash Metal, but you say it's kind of more extreme Heavy? Isn't that more or less what Thrash is? Or does the actual "speed" of it play a part?

It's sometimes difficult to make a difference between Speed Metal and Thrash Metal.

HELLOWEEN were playing Speed Metal in the very beginning :

But then, they re-integrated the very melodic side of Heavy Metal and decided to use clear singing only. It turned out to be called Heavy Speed (Speed Metal with a Heavy Metal influence) :

Same thing for BLIND GUARDIAN which were Speed Metal on their first album :

To me, bands like EDGUY, DRAGONFORCE, GAMMA RAY, etc. sound much more like HELLOWEEN's "Eagle Fly Free" than PANTERA's "I'm Broken", don't they ? You call Power Metal what we've been calling Heavy Speed for almost 20 years now in Europe, as far as I know.

I disagree on certain points (their so-called "European Power Metal" has nothing to do at all with their "US Power Metal" for instance--so why the fuck do they give them the same name ??) but it's pretty good on the whole though.
