It could be said that on Death magnetic, they have tried. I've heard the album and became bored of it really quickly. It didn't even sound very metal to me, more like blues rock. I'll stick to their earlier stuff, Puppets etc. The only older band still around that kicks arse to me is Slayer.

R U listening 2 the correct album??

Apart from the song "unforgiven III" which sits completely out of place on the album, it is basic 100% thrash metal.
The beginning of Cyanide has a minor element of slap bass which is something more accustomed to funk rock groups such as the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and is obviously there as a result of Robert Trujillo who grew up being inspired by such a sound. The song itself is still 100% thrash metal and the slap bass is only a minor element.

Blues Rock? I'm lost on this one.

In my own experience I found as I first listened I was very sceptical and very offish as to what to expect. I found myself naturally being anti the album as I was so pushed away since the released of the black album. However, the more I listened to the death magnet and came familiar with the songs I realised the songs are very good and a good return to where and justice for all left off (with the exception of Unforgiven III which is just plain boring)

Reading comments on the album it seems that "All nightmare long" is quickly becoming a favourite amongst the fans. This is the song I like best also.

Ok, i have listened to the album once, through crap speakers. Yes the slap bass is very prominent. They obviously didn't give Rob his million dollars for nothing. Blues rock was said in the context that i personally thought that the sound wasn't punchy and sounded like a band in the middle of a jam at a saloon. I personally find their sound watered down, dull and not hard at all anymore. When i heard the album i lost interest in it quickly. That's just my point of view. I guess i get to a certain point with bands and begin to hear them lose the sound that made me a fan in the first place.

Try listening to the album a few more time with good speakers. The slap bass was only in the song Cyanide and to me it wasn't too overpowering.

I am a very hard listener to please as I remember the old days and I was well disgusted when they released the black album and I actually gave my copy to a friend so he didn't buy it as I was that disproving of it.
To me the new album is very much in line with MOP & AJFA. I think the only real difference is Jame's vioce which is mostly due to age.
Have you heard the song "All nightmare long"? I suggest you turn it up using good speakers . Check out the riffs at 0.38.

Ok i'll give it another listen. The black album took me ages to get into because of how to me they commercialised their sound. I almost felt like it was a betrayal to the loyal old school fans. However that said i did like the symphony album. I liked that album, because i never thought in a million years they would do something like that. I have often wondered if Cliff was still alive would it have made a difference to their commercial direction?
